A private, free ChatGPT alternative that runs on your computer
Assistant is a chat app for open language models that run on your own graphics card. There is no account, and your conversations are stored in your browser, not on a server.
How to do it
- Open Assistant and look at Can my PC run it? to see which models suit your computer.
- On Models, download one, such as Qwen2.5 1.5B (about 880 MB) or Llama 3.2 3B (about 1.8 GB).
- Chat: pick a persona or write your own system prompt, and set the temperature if you like.
- Attach text files from your computer or Files to ask about them.
- Export a conversation as Markdown or JSON, or save it to Files.
The models here are small open models, from 0.5 to 7.6 billion parameters. They are quick on a good GPU but know less than very large models, and they do not search the web. The Build tab can write a small HTML app and run it in a sandbox.

Is Assistant made by OpenAI?
No. ITpris Verktyg is not affiliated with OpenAI. ChatGPT is a trademark of its owner, named here only to describe what people look for.
Is it really free?
Yes. The app is free, and each model's licence is shown before you download it. Some, such as Qwen2.5 3B, are for research and personal use only; the licence line says which allow commercial use.
Does it work without the internet?
The model download needs a connection. After that the model runs on your GPU and the chat itself makes no network requests.
Which browsers work?
A browser with WebGPU, such as a recent Chrome or Edge on a computer with a capable GPU. Can my PC run it? tells you what yours supports.
