1. Video Editor (ours)

Best for: Private, free edits up to 4K with no account and no upload, if you can live without a stock library.

Good

  • Footage stays on your device: nothing is uploaded
  • Multi-track timeline, trim and split, transitions, titles and colour
  • MP4 export with WebCodecs hardware encoding, sizes from phone 1080×1920 to 4K
  • Installs on phone, tablet and desktop from the browser, works offline, and also comes as a downloaded .html file
  • Add captions… transcribes the sound on your device (Whisper, about 40 MB once); Remove background sends a clip to Background Remover, also on your device
  • An AI button that can do the work in the app for you, with a model on your device, Ollama or LM Studio on your computer, or your own key for Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and others

Not so good

  • Still in beta
  • No stock library, AI voiceover or AI video generation
  • Captions come from a small speech model, so check names and jargon
  • No collaboration or cloud projects: save a .videoedit file or use Files
  • MP4 export needs WebCodecs; without it, WebM is recorded in real time

2. Clipchamp

Best for: Windows users who want free 1080p exports with AI captions, voiceover and a large stock library.

  • AI voiceover, subtitles in 80+ languages, noise and filler-word removal, background removal
  • Over a million royalty-free stock videos and templates
  • With a personal account, media files are not uploaded to a server for processing
  • Built into Windows 11

Not so good

  • Needs a Microsoft account and an active internet connection
  • 4K and premium stock need Microsoft 365
  • The iOS app is no longer supported from June 2026; sharing a project to edit together is for work and school accounts only

Good

  • Desktop apps for Windows and macOS and a mobile app
  • Cloud storage and collaboration

Not so good

  • Templates, cloud sync and AI features need a connection

Which one to choose

Video Editor is our pick for free exports without a watermark and with no account or upload: it exports up to 4K for free, your footage never leaves your device, and it installs from the browser and works offline. Captions and background removal run on your device too; it has no stock library, AI voiceover or AI video generation.

Choose Clipchamp or CapCut if you need AI voiceover, stock libraries and templates; both export without a watermark for free but need an account. Choose Kapwing if you edit together as a team and will pay for Pro; its free plan is the most limited here.
