Label Designer guide

Getting started with Label Designer

Label Designer designs labels with text, barcodes and QR codes, fills them from a spreadsheet and prints them on a sheet or a thermal printer. It runs in your browser.

Open Label Designer

Start a label

  1. Choose File, New….
  2. Pick Blank label and choose a roll or sheet size, or start from a ready-made label: a shipping label, a product label, a GS1-128 pallet label, an asset tag, a name badge or Avery 5160 address labels.
  3. The label opens on the canvas. The size and the printer resolution show above it.

Add and edit objects

The tools on the left add text, paragraphs, barcodes, QR codes, images, boxes, lines and ellipses. The Insert menu has the same, plus EAN-13, GS1-128, Data Matrix and an inverse box.

Click an object to select it and drag it into place. Its settings are in the Properties tab on the right: for a barcode, the data, the type, the module size and the height.

Insert field puts a variable or a data column into the text, written like {EAN}. Each label then shows its own value.

Fill labels from a spreadsheet

  1. Choose Data, Import CSV / Excel / JSON…, or Paste data….
  2. Match the columns of your file to the fields on the label, then click Use data.
  3. Open the Data tab. Click a row to see it on the label; PageUp and PageDown step through the records.
  4. Tick rows to print only those, or leave them all. A quantity column can set how many of each label to print.

Click Print…. Choose the records and the number of copies, then the output: Browser print, PDF, or the printer languages ZPL (Zebra), EPL2 and TSPL (TSC).

File, Export also has PNG and SVG of the current label. Save keeps the project; Download project (.labeldesigner) saves it as a file.
