Checksum guide
Getting started with Checksum
Checksum tells you the hash of a file, and whether it matches the hash its publisher gave you. The file is read in your browser and never uploaded.
Get the hash of a file
The page has three cards, numbered in the order you use them.
- Under 1. Choose a file, click Choose a file, or drop it here, and pick the file. You can also drop the file on that box.
- Under 2. Hashes, the hash appears. The line under the file box says which algorithm was used and the file name.
- Click Copy hash to put the hash on the clipboard.
Choose the algorithm
The Algorithm list has SHA-256 (the default), SHA-1, SHA-384 and SHA-512. Pick one and the hash is computed again for the same file.
Use the algorithm the publisher used. SHA-1 is there only to match older published hashes. Use SHA-256 for new checks.
Check a download against its published hash
Spaces, upper case letters and a prefix such as "sha256:" are ignored. If the length is wrong, Checksum says so and asks you to check the algorithm.
- Choose the file you downloaded, as above.
- Copy the hash from the download page.
- Paste it into Expected hash, under 3. Check against a published hash.
- Read the line below it. Match means the file is the one that was published. No match means the file differs.
Tip: Checksum hashes one file at a time. Choose the next file to start again.
