Transcribe audio to text: MP3, WAV, M4A and more

Drop an interview, a lecture, a voice memo or a podcast episode. Whisper turns the speech into text on your own device, and you can correct it before you save it.

Transcribe an audio file

How to do it

  1. Open Transcription. The first time, press Get more… and confirm the download of the Whisper tiny model (about 40 MB). It is kept in your browser for next time.
  2. Drop your audio files on the page, or choose them. MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, Opus and FLAC all work, several at once.
  3. Set Spoken language, or leave it on Detect, and press Transcribe. The files are read one after another, with progress for each.
  4. Read the transcript and fix any words it got wrong, right in the text box.
  5. Pick Text (.txt) or Word (.docx) and press Download, or press Copy.

Transcription uses Whisper tiny, a small multilingual speech model that is quick enough to run in a browser tab. It does well on clear speech and makes mistakes on names, jargon and noisy rooms, so read the text before you rely on it. Each file can be up to 2 hours long.

Your files stay on this device: Transcription runs in your browser, with no upload, no account and no watermark.

Questions

Are my recordings uploaded?

No. The sound is read and transcribed in your browser. Only the Whisper model is downloaded, once, from Hugging Face, and then kept in your browser.

Which audio formats can I use?

MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, Opus and FLAC, and other audio your browser can decode. Add several files at once and they are transcribed in turn.

How long can a recording be?

Up to 2 hours per file; split longer recordings into parts first. Long files take a while, because all the work happens on your computer.

Does it tell speakers apart?

No. The transcript is one text with no speaker labels. Turn on Show times to see when each part was said.
