Make a credit note for an invoice
An issued invoice cannot be edited. To take money back, for returned goods or a price agreed later, issue a credit note against it: it gets its own number and reverses the revenue and tax.
How to do it
- Open the issued or paid invoice in Invoices.
- Choose Credit note… The amount starts at everything that can still be credited.
- Type the amount to credit, the date and the reason (returned goods, a discount agreed later).
- If the credit is more than is still owed, choose how the rest is paid back: bank transfer, cash, card or other.
- Choose Issue credit note. It gets the next number (CN-0001) and can be printed as its own sheet.

Questions
What is the difference between void and a credit note?
Void cancels an issued invoice that has no payments; its number stays used. A credit note takes back part or all of an invoice, paid or not, and keeps both documents on record.
Does the credit note reverse the VAT or sales tax?
Yes. The revenue and the tax are reversed in proportion in the ledger, so the tax report and the profit both follow.
Can I credit only part of an invoice?
Yes. Type any amount up to what can still be credited. Credit the whole total and the invoice shows as Credited.
Can I print the credit note?
Yes. Each credit note opens as a printable sheet with your company, the customer, the invoice it credits, the reason and the amounts. Print it, or save it as PDF from the print dialog.
